The week of July 13th was spent in Poplar River First Nation. Our team consisted of members of Lorne Park Baptist Church (Mississauga, ON) and Highland Baptist Church (Kitchener, ON) as well as a few returning individuals. Many of our staff had been in Poplar River in previous years and were happy for the reunions with the children. Weather was a little hot and humid on the trip north, but our flights managed to arrive safely in advance of the thunderstorms (the same weather from this weekend in 2014!)
Thanks to Southeast Child & Family Services for sponsoring our program, for the warm hospitality shown by the community, and for the work of Margaret Bittern as she coordinated the logistics of housing, supplies and registration. We experienced a few glitches with the food supplies, but we are pretty sure that the kids enjoyed the days and didn’t go hungry! We had a full house every day which makes for lots of laughter and activity.
The logistics in Poplar allow for lots of “hang-out time” with the kids in the evening, although some wet weather interfered with swimming nights at Church Rock.
Through skits and songs, water games and balloons, crafts and sports as well as visits from our Kookum every day, the week was amazing. This was our 7th summer in Poplar and we have seen so many kids come through the program. It’s great when the older youth come back to say “hi” when Pathway is in town. We look forward to seeing you all again!
